Consumers, however, are often confused as to whether seafood is sustainable or not and what seafood to choose. The Nordic seafood sector now has the opportunity to take the lead in transitioning to low greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency measures and shifting to alternative fuels.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Working Group for Fisheries (AG-Fisk) within the Nordic council has recognized this, and as part of Iceland&#039;s presidency of the council in 2023, has initiated this project, to facilitate networking among stakeholders, raise awareness and share knowledge on past-, present- and future advances in reduction of environmental impacts in Nordic seafood value chains. Possible research projects will be explored and if relevant initiated, which will include presenting and reviewing funding opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Participation at the workshop is by invitation only, but interested participants can express interest in taking part by contacting <a href=\"mailto:jonas@matis.is\">jonas@matis.is<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>News and interesting background materials relevant for the project:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">On 21 February 2023, the European Commission published a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_23_828\">&#039;fisheries and oceans&#039; package<\/a>, which includes an action plan on decarbonising EU fisheries and aquaculture. The plan outlines two directions of change: it aims to increase energy efficiency in the short to medium term, while making a gradual switch from fossil fuels to renewable and low-carbon energy sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">On 2 June 2023, the European commission published a report titled &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/stoa\/en\/document\/EPRS_STU(2023)740225\">Decarbonising the fishing sector: Energy efficiency measures and alternative energy solutions for fishing vessels<\/a>\u201d. The report reviews the literature on drivers of energy use, identifies potential reduction measures and provides an overview of opportunities for using alternative fuels in the fishing sector. Each measure is evaluated in terms of greenhouse gas emission reduction potential and costs, and challenges and policy options that could facilitate implementation. A timeline lists measures that could be implemented in the shorter and longer term, on the basis of scientific and gray literature, projects and expert interviews. The report is available&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/STUD\/2023\/740225\/EPRS_STU(2023)740225_EN.pdf\">here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03371-z\">2021 Sale&nbsp;<em>et al.<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;published in&nbsp;<em>NATURE<\/em>&nbsp;a paper that claimed that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/mar\/17\/trawling-for-fish-releases-as-much-carbon-as-air-travel-report-finds-climate-crisis\">global bottom trawling releases as much carbon as air travel<\/a>. The paper received great attention and has been debated heavily since then. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06014-7\">2023 Hiddink&nbsp;<em>et al.<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;published also in&nbsp;<em>NATURE<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-05-paper-refutes-assertion-effects-bottom.html?fbclid=IwAR1cMeD2SCRIu7YJyZJtGyV7LZvuPdHKZ7291J13ONXEAuLI2MNVObizqQc\">a paper that refutes the assertion<\/a>&nbsp;in the paper of Sale&nbsp;<em>et al.<\/em>&nbsp;(2021). The issue remains debated and it is clear that more research is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03371-z\">Sale et al. 2021<\/a> is one of the most covered fishery-related journal articles of recent years, and has been quite controversial. The third official critique of Sala et al. 2021 was published in Nature in September of 2023. The paper by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06493-8\">Ovando et al. 2023<\/a> criticizes the food provisioning model that claimed a 5% increase in MPAs would lead to 20% more seafood production. It is the same model from Cabral et al. 2020 that was <a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/SustainableFisheriesUW\/third-critique-of-sala-et-al-2021-published-by-nature\/22701373-sustainablefisheries-uw.org\/flawed-mpa-science-retracted\/?c=71d5c2d9-a22d-4c00-9628-54d5c31c0523\">eventually retracted<\/a>.
