The production does not directly compete with terrestrial food production and may make use of anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Seaweed biomass can be transformed into a suitable substrate for fermentation using a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/biorefineries\">biorefinery<\/a>\u00a0approach. In this study the entire process of biofuel production from seaweed is described: starting with cultivation and harvest, the seaweed is dried and cut, enzymatically hydrolysed, demineralized, detoxified, and finally fermented into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/acetone\">acetone<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/butanol\">butanol<\/a>, and ethanol (ABE). Juvenile\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/saccharina-latissima\">Saccharina latissima<\/a><\/em>was directly seeded on AlgaeTex\u00ae nets and cultivated in the North East Atlantic off the west coast of Scotland for 6 months. Sun dried seaweed was hydrolysed with different\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/lysozyme\">enzymes<\/a>, looking for optimal glucose release, solid\/liquid ratio, and enzyme load. Using Cellic\u00ae\u00a0<em>CTec2<\/em>\u00a0in combination with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/alginate\">alginate<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/lyase\">lyases<\/a>, approximately 80% of available glucose was released. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/enzymatic-hydrolysis\">hydrolysis<\/a>\u00a0was scaled up to 100 L, using only Cellic\u00ae\u00a0<em>CTec2<\/em>. Part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/hydrolysate\">hydrolyzate<\/a>\u00a0was demineralized using ion-exclusion chromatography, removing over 90% of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/mineral\">minerals<\/a>\u00a0while recovering 92% of glucose and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/mannitol\">mannitol<\/a>. A fraction of the demineralized hydrolyzate was additionally detoxified using a hydrophobic resin to remove hydrophobic components to a concentration below the detection limit. The three hydrolysates (untreated, demineralized, and demineralized followed by detoxification) were used as substrate for ABE production by a newly developed strain of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/clostridium-acetobutylicum\">Clostridium acetobutylicum<\/a><\/em>\u00a0adapted to grow on\u00a0<em>S<\/em>.\u00a0<em>latissima<\/em>\u00a0hydrolyzate.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/demineralization\">Demineralization<\/a>\u00a0reduced the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/lag-phase\">song phase<\/a>\u00a0of fermentation from 72 h (untreated) to 24\u201348 h. Further detoxification of the hydrolysate led to immediate fermentation, resulting in a yield of 0.23 \u00b1 0.02 g<sub>ABE<\/sub>\/g<sub>sugar<\/sub>similar to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/fermentation-monitoring\">control fermentation<\/a>\u00a0in control medium (0.19 g<sub>ABE<\/sub>\/g<sub>sugar<\/sub>).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seaweed\u00a0(or macroalgae) produced sustainably at large scale opens opportunities as source of fuels, chemicals and food.
