Weber &amp; Mohr and its bioactive compounds in the &quot;omics&quot; era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/pharmacology-toxicology-and-pharmaceutical-science\/red-alga\">red alga<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/palmaria-palmata\">Palmaria palmata<\/a>\u00a0(&quot;dulse&quot;; Palmariaceae, Rhodophyta) has been used as food since the fifth century, especially in the North Atlantic region. Dulse is a good alternative to cereals due to its high content\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/food-science\/nutrient-profiling\">nutritional profile<\/a>. A critical review based on scientific and gray literature of dulse\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/food-science\/bioactive-compound\">bioactive compounds<\/a>\u00a0and their activity identified key knowledge gaps. The review synthesis emphasizes the importance of species delimitation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/microbial-community\">microbial community<\/a>\u00a0characterization and multi-omics in the research of\u00a0<em>P. palmata<\/em>. Recent advances and uncertainty in delimiting\u00a0<em>P. palmata<\/em>\u00a0are introduced in a phylogenetic context, and recommendations are given for the future\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/phytochemical\">phytochemicals<\/a>\u00a0studies. We refer to the concept of &quot;seaweed holobiont&quot; as the functional entity encompassing the seaweed and its associated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/pharmacology-toxicology-and-pharmaceutical-science\/microflora\">microbiota<\/a>, and call for action to characterize the microbial communities, since their interactions with the environment and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/pharmacology-toxicology-and-pharmaceutical-science\/kelp\">seaweed<\/a>\u00a0are important in seaweed well-being and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/postharvest\">postharvest<\/a>\u00a0quality changes (eg microbial spoilage and degradation of algal matrices). Finally, we discuss the status and trends of using multi-omics to address important research questions\u00a0<em>P. palmata<\/em>, and to help us understand the source, biosynthesis and function of it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/bioactive-compound\">bioactive compounds<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0red alga\u00a0Palmaria palmata\u00a0(\u201cdulse\u201d; Palmariaceae, Rhodophyta) has been used as food since the fifth century, especially in the North Atlantic region.
