The CLEAR-WATER project works to develop harmonised and cost-effective methods for monitoring litter in aquatic environments, from freshwater to coastal and marine areas – from the source of the litter to the ocean and from large waste items down to nanoplastics.
Aquatic litter is found across Europe’s groundwater, rivers, lakes, coastlines and seas, but it is not measured, analysed or reported consistently. This creates uneven evidence that is difficult to compare, combine and use to understand where litter is found, how it moves and what risks it creates.
CLEAR-WATER combines expertise across science, monitoring, technology, policy and citizen science to define what, where, when and how to measure across Europe’s waters. By improving and testing methods under real conditions, it will make aquatic litter data more reliable, comparable and useful for assessment and policy.
