History of Matís

In 2006, a law was passed by the Alþingi allowing the establishment of a public limited company that merged under one umbrella three state institutions specializing in research and development in the food industry. These were the Fisheries Research Institute, Keldnaholt Food Research, and the Environmental Agency Research Institute. Upon the establishment of Matís, the biotechnology company Prokaria was also integrated into the company. The same law provided for the new establishment of Matvælarannsóknir hf., but its operation as a public limited company began on January 1, 2007, under the name Matís. Its activities today fall under the Ministry of Industries and Innovation.

Matís operates on the basis of Act no. 68/2006 on Matís ohf. They can be found here: Act on Matís ohf.
