CLEAR-WATER is co-designing harmonised, cost-effective approaches for monitoring aquatic litter across freshwater, coastal and marine environments – from source to sea and from macro litter to nanoplastics.
Aquatic litter is found across Europe’s groundwater, rivers, lakes, coastlines and seas, but it is not measured, analysed or reported consistently. This creates uneven evidence that is difficult to compare, combine and use to understand where litter is found, how it moves and what risks it creates.
CLEAR-WATER combines expertise across science, monitoring, technology, policy and citizen science to define what, where, when and how to measure across Europe’s waters. By improving and testing methods under real conditions, it will make aquatic litter data more reliable, comparable and useful for assessment and policy.
