The NATALIE project focuses on supporting communities in adapting to climate change through nature-based solutions (NBS). In Iceland, the project is carried out in collaboration with municipalities, institutions and businesses in East Iceland, while the project as a whole involves 43 partners in 13 countries.

NATALIE Workshop in Reyðarfjörður on 28 October – Future Vision, Action and Water Quality

The NATALIE project recently hosted a workshop in Reyðarfjörður, where participants developed a shared vision for 2050 regarding improved water quality, aquatic biodiversity and coastal areas. The risk of algal blooms in East Iceland was also addressed, with efforts to prioritise the next steps with clear objectives and identify responsible parties for the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS). Discussion also focused on desirable development, key barriers and opportunities for promoting nature-based solutions in East Iceland.

The workshop was the third in the region since the project began in 2023, with the project running until August 2028. The first workshop focused on introducing NBS solutions and risk assessment in the region. The most pressing climate challenges for East Iceland were identified, including landslides, sea level rise, flooding, algal blooms and more. In May of this year, a group of stakeholders in the region met again, with the emphasis on exploring possible ways to finance NBS projects. Municipalities, ministries, companies and banks participated, highlighting both opportunities and challenges related to financing for the implementation of nature-based solutions, and the status of analyses and latest findings for the project's research area in the East Fjords was also reviewed.
