Project Manager

The consumer market calls for environmentally friendly packaging and there is a strong demand for less use of plastic in the value chain of vegetables. The project is intended to build a concise knowledge package on options for packing vegetables.

The project will be divided into four components: (1) The development of knowledge of packaging methods and packaging for vegetables. - Matís will work to build up knowledge in this field in order to disseminate it in a holistic way to the industry. (2) Shelf-life tests of vegetables in different packaging. - These tests will be performed at Matís in collaboration with manufacturers and are necessary to obtain results for Icelandic conditions. (3) Calculations of the carbon footprint of vegetables. - The Department of Horticultural Farmers has procured tools for this work and measurements will be carried out by horticultural farmers. (4) Promotion. - The members of the project consider it a key factor to disseminate comprehensive information to the industry. Knowledge will be shared with the vegetable sector, which can make decisions on the best solutions from quality and environmental protection. An online book on food packaging will be published on Matís website.
